Everything starts with a breast augmentation consultation. The surgeon evaluates the patient’s overall health, examines the breasts, takes measurements, discusses aesthetic goals, and makes implant recommendations. Together, they decide on implant type (saline or silicone), shape, size, texture, and surgical incisions. After implants are selected, the patient may try sizers to visualize potential results.
Lab testing should be done in the weeks leading up to surgery to ensure safety. A baseline mammogram can also be scheduled to check breast health. Smokers and patients over 40 may need extra clearance tests. The surgeon provides instructions on how to prepare for the procedure:
The inframammary incision is made under the breast. This incision works well for patients who want the scar to be hidden in the natural crease.
The periareolar incision goes around the areola. If this option is selected, the scar will be on the border between the darker areola and surrounding skin, making it less visible.
The transaxillary incision is made in the armpit area, so there is no scarring on the breast. This option is appropriate for implants of smaller sizes or the saline type.
The surgeon creates a pocket for the implant, either under the pectoral muscle (submuscular) for more coverage or behind the breast tissue (subglandular) on top of the muscle for quicker healing.
Most women take about a week off from ordinary activities. In the first couple of days, it’s important to have someone available to help with changing bandages, cooking meals, and other tasks. There will likely be some pain and discomfort that can be managed with prescription medication. Any stitches will be absorbed by the body over time and do not need to be removed.
It typically takes 1-2 weeks to return to work or study after surgery. Exercise and strenuous activity should be avoided for at least a month to allow the incisions to heal properly. Our surgeon lets the patient know when it is safe to resume normal activities. Follow-up appointments are also scheduled to monitor recovery.
All symptoms gradually decrease over several months. The patient must wear a post-surgery bra to provide support and help minimize swelling during the healing period. The final results will be visible around 6 months after surgery when the implants have settled into position.
Breast augmentation is the second most popular cosmetic procedure in the United States. Nearly 300,000 surgeries are performed each year to help patients feel more beautiful. A wide range of women can benefit from breast augmentation, including:
